I assert that universal self-employment is both desirable and realistic. In the proper institutional environment it would go a long way toward eliminating precarity and economic insecurity. Coupled with mutualist proposals to eliminate artificial property rights we can expect the significance of the market economy to fall and that of household and peer economies to rise. Self-employment may result in working longer but if people are able to find joyful work then we need not worry so much about this. Overall, though, I think working hours will fall, especially in the market economy (e.g., 20 hour work weeks). In my own approach to mutualism I view markets as simply useful tools and nothing to be glorified in and of themselves. I think they will be necessary for coordinating economic activity for the foreseeable future but if they eventually become obsolete then so be it. I’m not sure if this makes me an anagorist or not.
